Parents' top potty training tips

Wondering if your child will ever leave his nappy days behind? Here are some creative ways to make potty training a bit easier.

Before you start potty training

"Plan some interesting activities which will occupy your child, preferably in a small space. Do them quite close to the potty, for the first few days, so they get comfortable being around it. I bought some new puzzles and cheap sticker books which Amber loved."
Eloise

"Make sure your little one is aware of the potty, and what it's for, before you decide to start. Try lots of reading about potties, as well as talking about wees and poos. That way it becomes a normal part of life."
Daniel

Musical motivation

"We made up a potty song that we sang every time our daughter sat on the potty. She loved it. When she finished, we would sing a different song, saying what she had done. It wasn't too long before she used the potty every time."
Christie

"We found a brilliant potty which played music when my son sat on it. It worked like a dream. We'd had so much trouble prior to this, and I think making it entertaining helped."
Lizzie

Make going potty fun

"We put a flushable item, such as shaving foam, in the toilet, and our son just had to aim and shoot. Rewards were based on accuracy. It was fun and challenging, and did wonders for his precision! With poos, he had to send in the backup troops to finish the job with torpedoes. I doubt this would work when potty training girls, but Alex took less than a week to be fully potty-trained."
Roxanne

"We dyed the toilet water with red or blue food colouring. When it changed to orange or green he loved knowing that he'd caused it!"
Anna

"Lucy and I went to the bookshop, and she chose three picture books she really liked. We called these the potty books, and she could read them only when she sat on the potty. "
Amy

"The best incentive for Sam was letting him flush away the contents of his potty when he managed to go. The rule was that this is the only time he gets to flush the toilet. A much cheaper reward than toys!"
Deanne

Toys and treats

"We put a few toys and stickers in a sparkly gift bag. Every time our daughter used the potty, we would clap and let her pick one surprise out of the bag. We kept it up for about 10 days. When the surprises ran out she just kept on using the potty. We kept up the clapping and praise, and she quickly forgot the surprise bag. Potty training was surprisingly painless and quick."
Lottie

"If Megan successfully used the potty, she could have two white chocolate buttons. Within a month she was using the potty regularly, with only a few accidents, and by two-and-a-half she was trained."
Lisa

"At 16 months we started sitting Kelly's teddies on the loo and explaining to her that they didn't need nappies because they used the potty like Mummy and Daddy. Suddenly Kelly wanted to use the potty, just like her beloved teddies!"
Tara

"To encourage our son Alex to use the potty, we put a drawing of a racetrack on the wall. Every time he used the potty he got to put a sticker on the racetrack. When the racetrack was filled with stickers, he got to pick a small toy as a reward."
Cheryl

Put your child in charge

"When my two-year-old started going into the bathroom and closing the door, I knew she was ready to potty train. I would let her go in and use her potty, dump it into the big toilet, and put it up in the shower stall for me to rinse out."
Kat

"When my son Ben stopped using nappies, we used a timer to help us both remember to use the potty. We started with every 45 minutes and gradually increased the time. Eventually, he would tell me he needed to go before the timer went off, or say he didn't need to when it did. Then we'd set the timer for another half an hour and try again."
Beth

"We used an app which makes a sound at selected intervals, and can be personalised, so he gets to see that it's 'time for Toby to go'! It helped me to remember, as much as Toby."
Jo

"Our daughter was two-and-a-half when we finally got her trained, though it wasn't easy. She wanted to wear knickers, but not use the potty. So we finally just said she could go ahead and do what she wanted. Two days later, she started using the potty on her own, with no encouragement from us!"
Natalie

"Letting her control when she goes helps. We ask every half hour or so, but if she says 'no', we leave it a bit longer."
Charlie

Sitting solution

"We put Nathan on the toilet backwards, so he had the back of the toilet to hold on to. He could also do a poo that way, too. He thought that it was such fun he wanted to do it all the time. It took him a month to get the hang of it, and now he's happily standing up to wee."
Melissa

"I let my daughter sit on the toilet with a training seat, as she preferred this to sitting on a potty. She was also happier if I gave her a book to read whilst she was doing this."
Joanne

"We bought Sam a potty the other day, just for him to get used to it. We sit him on it first thing in the morning and just before his bath most days."
Kate

Minimise mess and stress

"If accidents happen, try not to get upset, or involve your little one in the cleaning of the mess. William was wet up to three times a day for a whole week when he was nearly four. I found it hard to keep my cool, but he always reacted better when I was calm and positive."
Josephine

"It just needs a lot of praise when they do it right and a relaxed 'oh dear, never mind' if they get it wrong. My little one was put off if I made a big deal of accidents and didn't want to try again."
Sally

"I bought four or five of the cheapest potties I could find and placed each in an area of the house where my son spent the most time, including his play area and bedroom. This way, he wouldn't have very far to go when he had to go."
Mei Leng

"Buy some cheap tracksuit bottoms, as they're easy to pull up and down, and to wash!"
Alice

"Focus on the achievements, rather than the accidents. I gave my daughter lots of praise: 'What a big-girl thing to do!', 'You must be very proud of yourself', 'Do you want to call Granny to tell her?', 'Give me a high five!', and so on."
Kirsten

The power of proper pants

"My son was fully potty-trained at three, except he wouldn't do a poo in the toilet. I tried everything. One day we were shopping and he asked for boxers. I told him that if we got these he would have to use the toilet or it would get all over the place. That seemed to be the magic thing, because ever since then, he has had no more accidents."
Susie

"I let my daughter wear undies every day until naptime, and I put plastic pants over them to prevent messes. In the beginning she wet several times a day and didn't like the feeling. I also gave her 10p for her piggy bank every time she sat on the potty. She was trained by 20 months.
Rose

"I let my son choose some pants with his favourite character, Thomas the Tank Engine, on them. Then I told him not to get Thomas wet. It worked really well!"
Maria

"Take your little one shopping and let her pick out some knickers for her to wear around the house instead of nappies. She will soon realise when's she's wet."
Emily

"We put pants underneath Molly's nappy so she could feel when she'd wet them. The nappy meant we didn't have to clean up accidents."
Martin

No more nappies

"My daughter tortured me for months, using the potty successfully one day, then demanding nappies the next. I told her that the pack of nappies we had just bought was the last, and I wasn't buying any more. When we got down to the last few nappies, I again emphasised that when they were gone, there wouldn't be any more. We then went on to training pants, with disposable ones at night. She had a few accidents the first week, but has been trained ever since!"
Emily

"Resist the temptation of using disposable training pants all the time. Children don't get uncomfortable when they are wet, and it prolongs potty training."
Sophie

"My two-year-old informed me that she didn't want her nappy on, as it was uncomfortable. She has been dry since then, with very few accidents. The key is to use cloth nappies, which can be too bulky for a newly-walking child to want to have on. Not to mention the wet flannel feeling!"
Beth

"I put my daughter in dresses for about three weeks with no nappy or pants underneath, while we were potty training. It was easier for her to get ready for the potty, and allowed quick decisions when she was in the middle of playing."
